NATIONAL: CPI Calls Nationwide Protest on 22nd Against ‘Jai Ram Ji’ Bill
The Communist Party of India has announced nationwide demonstrations on December 22, 2025, to oppose the proposed replacement of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act.
General Secretary D. Raja revealed the decision after the party’s National Secretariat meeting in New Delhi on December 16.
The protests aim to rally support against the Viksit Bharat Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) Bill, often referred to as VB-G RAM G.
Raja described the bill as a direct assault on workers’ rights and federal principles.
Major Concerns Raised by the Party
The CPI strongly criticized the shift of 40 percent funding responsibility to states, already strained by GST issues and central policies.
It argued that the change ends the demand-driven nature of MGNREGA, stripping workers of their legal right to seek jobs.
The party highlighted the scheme’s vital role in stabilizing rural economies during crises like the COVID-19 pandemic.
Raja called the move anti-democratic and urged all like-minded forces to resist it.
Impact on Rural Workers and Federalism
The new bill promises 125 days of work annually but replaces the rights-based guarantee with a centrally controlled allocation system.
The CPI warned this could lead to reduced employment opportunities and greater exploitation.
It accused the government of bypassing consultations and undermining the federal structure.
These developments come amid widespread opposition from multiple parties to the proposed legislation.
