INTERNATIONAL: US Invites China for Tariff Talks
US Outreach for Negotiations
US officials have reached out to Chinese authorities through various channels to discuss tariffs, according to a Beijing-based media outlet. The talks aim to prevent disruptions to global supply chains.
CCTV (CCTV) reports that the US is eagerly awaiting these discussions, with the Trump (Donald Trump) administration facing significant pressure.
Escalating Tariff Conflict
In April 2025, the Trump administration imposed 145% tariffs on Chinese goods. In retaliation, China approved 125% tariffs on US products.
These tariffs have heightened trade tensions between the two nations, raising concerns about the global economy.
China’s Rebuttal
Last week, Chinese Foreign Ministry official Guo Jiakun (Guo Jiakun) refuted Trump’s claims, stating no tariff talks are currently underway. However, he noted China’s openness to future discussions based on equality and mutual respect.
China remains firm in safeguarding its economic interests without compromise.
Trump’s Optimism
US President Trump has repeatedly claimed that negotiations with China are ongoing and a deal is likely. During a NewsNation Town Hall (NewsNation Town Hall), he stated that any agreement would align with US terms.
China, however, dismisses these assertions and demands that the US reduce tariffs first.
Economic Fallout
The tariffs have slashed US-China trade by 60%, causing supply chain disruptions and job losses. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has warned that these measures could hamper global economic growth.
China is reportedly considering tariff exemptions for certain US goods but has not confirmed this publicly.
