NATIONAL: US-India Tensions Rise: Trump Slams Russia Ties, Imposes Tariffs

Trump’s Outburst on India-Russia Relations
US President Donald Trump sharply criticized India’s trade with Russia, calling both economies “dead” and stating he is unconcerned about their partnership.

He announced a 25% tariff on Indian goods, effective August 1, 2025, with an additional unspecified penalty for India’s purchase of Russian oil and arms.

This follows Trump’s claim that India’s high tariffs and trade barriers limit US business, despite describing India as a “friend.”

India’s Response to Tariffs
The Indian government, through Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal, stated it is studying the implications of Trump’s tariffs and will take steps to protect national interests.

India remains committed to negotiating a fair bilateral trade agreement, with talks ongoing since March 2025.

Officials noted that any tariffs imposed may be temporary, as discussions aim for a deal by fall 2025.

US Sanctions on Indian Firms
The US imposed sanctions on six Indian companies—Kanchan Polymers, Alchemical Solutions, Ramniklal S Gosalia & Co, Jupiter Dye Chem Private Limited, Global Industrial Chemicals Limited, and Persistent Petrochem Private Limited—for trading Iranian petroleum products.

The US claims these funds support terrorism.
Sanctions also target 50 individuals and entities, including Pankaj Nagjibhai Patel, Jacob Kurien, and Anil Kumar Panakkal Narayanan Nair, linked to Iranian oil trade networks.

Russia’s Retort to Trump
Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, now Vice Chairman of Russia’s Security Council, warned Trump against underestimating Russia, referencing its Soviet-era nuclear capabilities, known as “Dead Hand.” He dismissed Trump’s remarks as provocative and dangerous.

Medvedev’s response highlights escalating tensions, with Russia defending its trade relations with India and others.

Congress and BJP Clash
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi supported Trump’s “dead economy” remark, criticizing the prime minister and finance minister for ignoring economic challenges.

The BJP condemned Gandhi’s comments as an insult to India and its people.

This political spat underscores domestic divisions amid international trade pressures.

Trump’s Pakistan Deal
Trump announced a trade agreement with Pakistan to develop its oil reserves, hinting that Pakistan could one day sell oil to India.

However, Pakistan currently imports oil from West Asia, and no evidence supports claims of significant reserves.

This move appears aimed at pressuring India, given the rivalry between the two nations.

Global Trade Context
Trump’s tariffs are part of a broader policy targeting 68 countries, with India facing a 25% duty and additional penalties for Russian trade.

The US also secured trade deals with Japan, the EU, and others, setting tariffs at 15-20%.

India’s $45.8 billion trade surplus with the US in 2024 is a key factor in Trump’s push to reduce the deficit.
