INTERNATIONAL: Trump Steps In: Mediates Ceasefire Between Iran and Israel
Direct Phone Call to Netanyahu
Former U.S. President Donald Trump played a key role in mediating a ceasefire between Iran and Israel, according to senior officials. Trump reportedly called Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu directly, urging him to accept a peace agreement amid escalating conflict in the region.
U.S. Officials in Contact with Iran
While Trump reached out to Netanyahu, his administration facilitated communication with Iranian officials. U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance, Secretary of State Mark Rubio, and special envoy Steve Wyckoff were involved in direct and indirect talks with Tehran. These discussions reportedly took place soon after American airstrikes targeted key nuclear sites in Iran.
Ceasefire Talks Follow U.S. Military Action
Just before initiating peace talks, the U.S. launched precision strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities as part of its support for Israel’s “Operation Rising Lion.” These strikes took place late Saturday night (U.S. time). Trump then instructed his team to begin ceasefire negotiations, reportedly stating, “Call the Iranian authorities. Get Bibi [Netanyahu] on the line. We are going to make peace.”
Ceasefire Announcement and Reactions
Trump later confirmed the ceasefire on his Truth Social platform, stating that Iran and Israel had agreed to halt hostilities and that the war would officially end within 12 hours. While Iran initially disputed Trump’s announcement, it later signaled openness to an agreement. However, the Israeli government has not issued any formal response regarding the ceasefire.
