NATIONAL: India’s Air Force Gets a Major Lift
The Indian Ministry of Defence has inked a significant contract with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited to bolster the nation’s aerial capabilities.
This agreement focuses on acquiring homegrown Light Combat Aircraft Tejas, marking a step forward in self-reliant defense production.
Under the deal valued at Rs 62,370 crore, HAL will supply 97 Mk1A variants.
These include 68 single-seat fighters for combat roles and 29 twin-seat trainers to support pilot preparation.
Delivery Schedule and Fleet Integration
Deliveries are slated to start in the 2027-28 fiscal year, with all units handed over within six years. This timeline aligns with the phased retirement of aging aircraft in the Indian Air Force.
The new Tejas jets will replace the MiG-21 fighters, which are being decommissioned starting this Friday. This upgrade aims to modernize the fleet with advanced, indigenous technology.
Building on Prior Agreements
This marks the second major pact between the ministry and HAL for Tejas aircraft.
The initial contract, signed in February 2021, covered 83 jets at Rs 48,000 crore, highlighting ongoing commitment to domestic manufacturing.
The latest approval came swiftly from the Cabinet Committee on Security, chaired by Prime Minister Modi. It underscores efficient decision-making in defense procurement.
Broader Impacts
Beyond military enhancement, the project is expected to generate 11,750 jobs, both direct and indirect.
This contributes to economic growth while strengthening national security.
The emphasis on indigenous development reduces reliance on foreign suppliers, fostering technological innovation within India’s defense sector.
