ANDHRA PRADESH: Balakrishna’s Psycho Jibe: AP Assembly Erupts?

A heated exchange in the Andhra Pradesh Assembly laid bare old wounds between film stars and politicians, with MLA Nandamuri Balakrishna firing sharp barbs at former Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy.

The clash, sparked by BJP MLA Kamineni Srinivas’s recounting of a past industry meeting, quickly drew in Chiranjeevi’s name and fueled accusations of insults and fabrications.

As the session unfolded, it highlighted the fragile ties between Telugu cinema and state power.

Kamineni’s Provocative Recount
Kamineni Srinivas, a BJP legislator, revisited events from Jagan’s tenure, claiming the former leader had little interest in engaging film personalities.

He alleged Jagan only relented after Chiranjeevi pressed hard for the audience, painting a picture of reluctance and eventual concession.

This narrative, delivered amid broader policy debates, set the stage for immediate pushback, underscoring perceived slights toward the creative sector.

Balakrishna’s Fiery Rebuttal
Balakrishna, the veteran actor-turned-MLA, swiftly dismissed Kamineni’s version as outright deceit.

He labeled Jagan a “psycho,” recounting his own decision to skip an invitation to meet such a figure, and insisted no one, least of all Chiranjeevi, had raised their voice to force the encounter.

Balakrishna went on to affirm that the group, including Chiranjeevi, faced outright disrespect during the visit, yet stayed silent at the time.

In a pointed jab, he mocked the setup: the industry delegation was redirected to the cinematography minister first, and his own name appeared ninth on a supposed film development invite list.

“Who ranked me there? And what about basic courtesy?” Balakrishna fumed, questioning the organizers’ intent.

Perni Nani’s Sharp Counter
Former minister Perni Nani, undeterred, turned the spotlight on Balakrishna’s conduct in the house.

He referenced a past “mental certificate” issued to the MLA, suggesting recent outbursts only validated it, and quipped that Balakrishna’s lineage traced back to “uncultured” roots.

As Balakrishna ranted freely, the speaker had to mute his microphone, a rare move that Nani hailed as bold amid the assembly’s usual deference.

Nani also shared a personal anecdote, noting a call he received promising a Jagan meeting for the film Akhanda, only to highlight the irony of the day’s drama.

Echoes of Industry Grievances
The uproar ties back to a 2020 push for ticket price hikes amid Covid constraints, where Chiranjeevi mediated to ease financial strains on producers.

Balakrishna’s exclusion from that group lingers as a sore point, with his comments reviving debates on unity in Telugu cinema.

Chiranjeevi, in a recent statement, clarified his role as a bridge-builder, crediting the effort for benefits seen in films like Veerasimha Reddy.

This assembly showdown, blending personal vendettas with policy echoes, raises questions about accountability in public discourse.

Will it mend fences or widen rifts in Andhra’s star-studded political landscape?
