NATIONAL: India Moves to Deport 16,000 Foreign Nationals

Crackdown Under New Immigration Law
The Indian government has begun preparations to deport nearly 16,000 foreigners currently detained across the country.

According to government sources, the decision comes under the newly implemented Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025, which recently came into force.

Officials confirmed that most of these individuals were detained by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) for involvement in drug trafficking and related criminal activities.

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) is now finalizing the procedures for their deportation.

Stringent Punishments for Illegal Stay
The new legislation introduces strict penalties for foreigners staying in India with forged or invalid documents. Effective from September 2, the Act replaces four older immigration laws.

As per the provisions:

  • Illegal entry using fake documents can attract 2–7 years of imprisonment.
  • Offenders may face fines ranging from ₹1 lakh to ₹10 lakh.
  • Deportation procedures will be expedited under the new system.

Addressing Wider Concerns
Government officials argue that illegal immigration has worsened socio-economic challenges in the country. Despite India’s rise as the world’s fourth-largest economy, millions continue to live below the poverty line.

Authorities point out that illegal immigrants not only strain resources but also tap into welfare schemes designed for citizens. By enforcing deportation, the Center hopes to ensure that state-funded benefits reach the intended population.

Next Steps in Enforcement
The Ministry of Home Affairs is coordinating with state governments to identify and process cases under the new framework.

Officials emphasized that the current action is part of a long-term strategy to tighten border controls and curb organized crimes linked to immigration.

The deportation plans are expected to be rolled out in phases, with priority given to cases already under detention.
