AP Coconut Farmers Rejoice as Prices Soar to Record ₹17,500 per Quintal

Coconut farmers in Andhra Pradesh are celebrating a significant surge in prices, with dry coconut reaching an unprecedented ₹17,500 per quintal. This price escalation, attributed to reduced production, has brought relief to farmers, while innovative agritourism initiatives in East Godavari add new revenue streams.

Unprecedented Price Surge

The price of dry coconut in Andhra Pradesh has skyrocketed to ₹17,500 per quintal, a historic high in the state’s market. This marks a sharp rise from ₹9,500 last year, with prices climbing steadily from ₹14,000 in March to ₹16,000 by late April, driven by reduced yields in Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu.

Production Decline Drives Costs

Traders attribute the price increase to a significant drop in coconut production across major growing regions like Amalapuram, Alappuzha, and Pollachi. In Tamil Nadu, yields have decreased from 130–140 kg to 110–120 kg per 1,000 coconuts, tightening supply and boosting market rates.

Fresh Coconut Market Trends

Fresh coconuts are also fetching strong prices, with 1,000 nuts yielding 85–90 kg of copra and selling for ₹14,000–14,500. Farmers prefer selling fresh nuts to avoid high labor and processing costs, further contributing to the scarcity of processed copra.

Comparison with Recent Market Data

Recent market data from April 2025 reported an average coconut price of ₹8,174.29 per quintal, with a peak of ₹30,940 in some markets, indicating volatility. The current ₹17,500 per quintal in Andhra Pradesh reflects a localized spike, likely due to regional supply constraints.

Agritourism Ventures in East Godavari

In East Godavari, farmers are diversifying income through agritourism by establishing resorts within coconut groves. These resorts in areas like Amalapuram, Ainavilli, and Rajolu offer tourists a serene retreat, blending nature with modern amenities.

Resort Facilities and Pricing

The resorts provide air-conditioned rooms, TVs, and private kitchens, with daily rentals starting at ₹2,500 per room or ₹50,000 for an entire guesthouse. These facilities also host events, attracting tourists seeking respite from urban life.

Economic Impact for Farmers

The price surge alleviates past financial struggles for coconut farmers, who previously faced unremunerative rates. The combination of high market prices and agritourism revenue is enhancing livelihoods in coastal Andhra Pradesh.

Regional Market Significance

Markets like Konaseema have recorded all-time high copra prices, underscoring Andhra Pradesh’s pivotal role in the coconut trade. The decline in copra production, as farmers focus on fresh nuts, has further intensified market dynamics.

Future Outlook

The sustained high prices and innovative ventures like agritourism signal a promising future for Andhra Pradesh’s coconut farmers. However, addressing production challenges will be key to maintaining market stability and farmer prosperity.
