National: India’s 2027 Census: A Digital Leap Forward
Gazette Notification Issued
The Union Home Ministry has issued a gazette notification on June 16, 2025, to commence India’s 16th population census, marking the eighth such exercise since independence. This census, set to begin in October 2026, will be conducted in two phases, with completion targeted for March 1, 2027.
Digital-First Approach
For the first time, the census will be fully digital, utilizing tablets for data collection by enumerators. Citizens will also have the option to self-report data through dedicated online portals and mobile applications, enhancing efficiency and accessibility.
Caste Enumeration Included
A significant inclusion is the collection of caste-based data, a first in 17 years, aimed at providing comprehensive demographic and socio-economic insights. This move is expected to inform policy-making and development planning.
Two-Phase Implementation
- Phase 1 (House Listing Operation): Scheduled to collect data on housing conditions, assets, and amenities.
- Phase 2 (Population Enumeration): Will gather detailed demographic, socio-economic, cultural, and caste-related information.
Regional Timeline Variations
The census will commence on October 1, 2026, in snow-bound regions like Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand. The rest of India will begin the process on March 1, 2027, ensuring logistical feasibility.
Massive Workforce Deployment
Approximately 34 lakh enumerators and supervisors will be deployed nationwide, supported by an additional 1.34 lakh personnel. This extensive workforce aims to ensure accurate and timely data collection across diverse terrains.
Robust Data Security Measures
The Ministry has emphasized stringent security protocols for data collection, transfer, and storage. These measures aim to safeguard sensitive information, addressing concerns about privacy and data integrity.
Significance for National Development
Conducted after a 15-year hiatus, this census will provide critical data to shape India’s developmental strategies. The inclusion of caste data and digital methodologies underscores its role in modern governance.
