NATIONAL: India Summons Bangladesh High Commissioner

India has called in Bangladesh’s High Commissioner to New Delhi amid rising concerns over security threats to its diplomatic mission in Dhaka.

The move follows reports of potential disruptions and inflammatory statements from Bangladeshi political figures.

New Delhi views these developments as part of a broader deterioration in the bilateral security environment.

Details of the Summons
On December 17, 2025, the Ministry of External Affairs summoned High Commissioner M Riaz Hamidullah.

Officials expressed strong worries about activities by extremist elements planning actions around the Indian High Commission in Dhaka.

India highlighted the need for Bangladesh to fulfill its obligations in protecting foreign missions.

Triggering Remarks and Threats
The action came shortly after National Citizen Party leader Hasnat Abdullah made provocative comments.

At a public rally, he warned of isolating India’s northeastern states, known as the Seven Sisters, and offering refuge to separatist groups if Bangladesh faced destabilization.

He referenced the region’s vulnerability via the Siliguri Corridor, drawing sharp criticism for threatening territorial integrity.

India’s Official Stance
The MEA condemned what it called false narratives surrounding recent incidents in Bangladesh.

It noted disappointment over the interim government’s lack of thorough probes or sharing of evidence.

New Delhi reiterated its support for stability and peaceful elections in the neighboring country.

Strained Bilateral Ties
Relations have cooled since Sheikh Hasina’s resignation in August 2024 amid student protests.

She fled to India, where she remains, prompting ongoing extradition requests from Dhaka.

Recent exchanges include mutual concerns over minority safety and alleged cross-border activities.

Key issues fueling tension:

  • Anti-India rhetoric from some Bangladeshi leaders.
  • Reports of threats to diplomatic facilities.
  • Differing views on internal investigations.

Both sides continue diplomatic engagements, but challenges persist in restoring full trust.
