Amaravati: Corporate Cash Fuels AP Political Surge

TDP’s Substantial Inflows

In the 2024-25 financial year, Andhra Pradesh’s ruling Telugu Desam Party pulled in Rs 83.03 crore through donations, down slightly from the previous year’s Rs 100.18 crore. Party leaders earmarked Rs 38 crore of this for public welfare initiatives like health schemes for the poor. State president Palla Srinivasa Rao emphasized accountability, noting every rupee supports transparent governance.

This funding reflects growing corporate interest in stable regional alliances. Families benefiting from these programs often share stories of real impact, like better access to medical care.

Key Contributors to TDP

Prudent Electoral Trust led with Rs 40 crore, highlighting organized channels for political support. Hyderabad-based Natco Pharma added Rs 7 crore, while Bengaluru’s Varsity Education Management and AB General Trust each gave Rs 5 crore. Triumph Trust chipped in Rs 4 crore.

  • Priya Aqua Farms and United Tele Links: Rs 2 crore each
  • Solar energy firms: Various amounts, signaling green sector ties
  • Individuals: Sharat Babu Bollineni and Krishna Mohan Bollineni, Rs 2 crore apiece

Such diverse backers show how business leaders bet on policies favoring growth. One donor mentioned hoping for smoother regulations in return.

Jana Sena’s Donor Base

Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan’s Jana Sena Party received Rs 25.33 crore in the same period, mostly from individuals and companies without electoral trust involvement. Hyderabad’s RVM Constructions donated Rs 3 crore, DVK Constructions Rs 2 crore, and Natco Pharma Rs 1 crore. Shadnagar resident Ravi Kumar Akula topped with Rs 5 crore.

Spokesperson Ajay Kumar Vemulapati thanked small donors, including pensioners and workers giving Rs 10 or 20. These grassroots contributions add a personal touch, reminding us of everyday people’s stake in politics.

BJP’s Record-Breaking Haul

Nationally, the Bharatiya Janata Party amassed Rs 6,088 crore in donations for 2024-25, a 53 percent jump from Rs 3,967 crore the year before. This dwarfs Congress’s Rs 522.13 crore and exceeds combined opposition inflows by 4.5 times. It’s the highest in six years for the BJP.

This surge underscores the party’s dominance, but it also sparks debates on influence. Voters wonder if such funds truly serve public needs or favor big business.

Rise of Electoral Trusts

With Supreme Court scrapping electoral bonds, trusts like Prudent and Progressive now channel 61 percent of BJP’s funds, totaling Rs 3,744 crore. Giants such as Tata Group, L&T, Megha Engineering, OP Jindal, and Mahindra donated heavily through these. Tata led, followed by Serum Institute and Vedanta.

This shift raises questions about transparency in a post-bond era. While efficient, it leaves some feeling big donors hold too much sway over decisions affecting daily lives.

Broader Funding Trends

Regional parties like TDP and Jana Sena saw pharma, solar, and real estate firms step up, aligning with state development goals. Yet, national disparities highlight uneven playing fields. As alliances strengthen, citizens hope these resources translate to tangible progress, not just power plays.
