Trump’s Assertion of Mediation Role

US President Donald Trump has reiterated his claim of resolving a military conflict between India and Pakistan, asserting personal credit for de-escalation. Speaking at the White House, Trump emphasized his diplomatic intervention following discussions with Pakistan’s Army Chief Asim Munir and a call with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a brief three-minute call with Trump, clarified that the ceasefire following the May 7-10 clash resulted from direct military talks between India and Pakistan. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri underscored India’s stance, stating no third-party mediation, including from the US, was involved.

Describing Modi as a “wonderful person,” Trump announced intentions to finalize a trade agreement with India. He also expressed admiration for Pakistan, stating, “I love Pakistan,” while commending both nations’ leaders for their roles in averting further conflict.

India’s Firm Stance on Sovereignty

India has consistently rejected external mediation in its disputes with Pakistan, with Modi emphasizing that any Pakistani aggression will prompt a robust response. The Indian government maintains that bilateral military communication was the sole mechanism for de-escalation.

Pakistan’s Role Acknowledged by Trump

Trump praised Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir for contributing to the cessation of hostilities. The White House meeting with Munir preceded Trump’s public statements, highlighting Pakistan’s military leadership in the context of the ceasefire.
