TELANGANA: Telugu States Clash Over Krishna River Projects
Escalating Interstate Water Dispute
On July 18, 2025, Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy issued a fervent appeal to Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, urging the cancellation of the Rayalaseema Lift Irrigation Project (RLIP). Reddy argued that the project, designed to divert three thousand million cubic feet (TMC) of Krishna River water daily, threatens Telangana’s water security. He emphasized equitable development for both Telugu-speaking states, spotlighting a contentious interstate water dispute.
Call for Cooperation on Telangana Projects
During a public meeting in Jataprolu, Pentlavelli mandal, Nagarkurnool district, Reddy pressed Naidu to support the completion of Telangana’s critical irrigation initiatives, including the Palamuru-Ranga Reddy, Dindi, Bhima, Kalvakurthi, Nettempadu, and Koilsagar projects. He underscored their historical significance, noting that several were initiated during Naidu’s tenure as Chief Minister of undivided Andhra Pradesh. Reddy’s plea highlighted the need for collaborative water management to benefit farmers across both states.
Accusations of Obstruction
Reddy questioned Naidu’s opposition to Telangana’s irrigation endeavors, particularly the Palamuru-Ranga Reddy project, which began when Naidu was in the opposition. He criticized the decade-long delay under former Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao, asserting that Andhra Pradesh’s resistance exacerbates the issue. Reddy vowed to lead a determined effort to safeguard Telangana’s water rights if appeals go unheeded, signaling potential escalation.
Economic Empowerment Initiatives
In addition to addressing water concerns, Reddy handed over a cheque of Rs. 344 crore to support interest-free loans for self-help group members in Nagarkurnool. This financial aid aims to bolster economic empowerment and grassroots development. The event underscored Telangana’s commitment to socio-economic progress amid ongoing interstate tensions.
Broader Implications for Regional Harmony
The dispute underscores longstanding challenges in water-sharing between Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, rooted in the 2014 Andhra Pradesh Reorganization Act and prior tribunal awards. Reddy’s call for Naidu to demonstrate “generosity” reflects a desire for diplomatic resolution, yet his readiness to lead a “fight” suggests preparedness for legal or political action. The outcome could shape regional agricultural sustainability and interstate relations.
