Hyderabad: Telangana Cracks Down: 19,000 Licenses Revoked
Telangana’s Transport Department has intensified its enforcement of traffic regulations, revoking nearly 19,000 driving licenses for serious violations. This decisive action underscores the state’s commitment to road safety and responsible driving. The department’s recent progress report details these measures alongside initiatives to modernize transport services.
License Revocations for Violations
Between December 2023 and June 2025, the Telangana Transport Department suspended 18,973 driving licenses. Key infractions include driving under the influence, overspeeding, and operating vehicles while impaired by narcotics. These measures align with the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, to curb reckless driving and enhance public safety.
Digital Transformation with ‘Vahan’ App
To streamline services, the department plans to implement the ‘Vahan’ application by August 2025, mirroring systems in neighboring states. This digital platform will simplify vehicle registration and other services, ensuring faster, more accessible processes for citizens. The initiative aims to enhance transparency and efficiency in transport operations.
Electric Vehicle Incentives
Telangana is promoting electric vehicle (EV) adoption through its EV Policy, offering 100% exemptions on road tax and registration fees. From November 2024 to June 2025, 49,633 EVs benefited from exemptions worth ₹369.27 crore. This reflects the state’s commitment to sustainable transport and environmental conservation.
Transition to ‘TG’ Registration Code
Since March 15, 2024, the vehicle registration code ‘TS’ has been replaced with ‘TG’ across Telangana. By June 30, 2025, 13.05 lakh vehicles were updated to the new code. This transition standardizes vehicle identification and aligns with administrative reforms.
Advanced Driving Test Infrastructure
To ensure rigorous and transparent license issuance, the department is upgrading 25 two-wheeler tracks, 27 four-wheeler tracks, and 5 heavy vehicle tracks into automated driving test facilities. Equipped with advanced technology, these tracks will enhance the accuracy of driving skill assessments.
Pollution Control Measures
The Transport Department is integrating pollution testing centers with a centralized IT-based system to monitor vehicle emissions effectively. This initiative aims to strengthen environmental compliance and reduce vehicular pollution. It reflects a proactive approach to sustainable urban mobility.
Telangana’s multifaceted strategy, combining strict enforcement, digital innovation, and environmental focus, aims to foster safer roads and efficient transport systems.
