INTERNATIONAL: Tarique Rahman Returns to Dhaka After 17 Years

After 17 years in London exile, BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman is set to land in Dhaka on December 25.

He will travel with his wife, Dr. Zubaida Rahman, and daughter, Zaima Rahman, on a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight from Heathrow.

The plane is expected to touch down around midday, marking a pivotal moment ahead of national elections.

Grand Welcome Plans
The BNP has organized a massive reception, anticipating millions of supporters gathering in the capital.

Special trains and transports are bringing activists from across the country.

A brief public address is planned near the airport area, followed by a procession to minimize disruptions.

Family and Political Priorities
Upon arrival, Rahman will head straight to Evercare Hospital to visit his mother, Khaleda Zia, who remains in critical care.

Later plans include paying respects at his father’s grave. These personal steps underscore the emotional weight of his return amid family health concerns.

Government Stance
The interim administration, led by Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus, has openly welcomed Rahman’s comeback.

Officials confirmed full cooperation, including tailored security measures in coordination with the BNP. This reflects efforts to ensure a smooth transition during a sensitive political period.

Legal Clearance Paved Way
Recent acquittals in multiple cases, including serious charges from past governments, removed barriers to his return.

Rahman had directed party affairs remotely from London due to these legal issues. Now cleared, he steps back into direct leadership as polls approach in February.

Electoral Implications
His arrival signals a major boost for the BNP, viewed as a frontrunner in upcoming parliamentary votes.

Analysts see it as a show of strength, testing mobilization capabilities. The event comes amid broader calls for stable, inclusive elections to restore democratic processes.
