ANDHRA PRADESH: Streeshakti: Free Bus Travel for Women in AP from Aug 15

Empowering Mobility with Streeshakti Scheme
The Andhra Pradesh government will launch the Streeshakti scheme on August 15, 2025, enabling free travel for women on APSRTC buses. This initiative, part of the TDP’s Super Six promises, aims to enhance women’s mobility and economic independence. The scheme covers non-premium Palle Velugu and Express buses within state borders.

Zero Fare Tickets to Promote Transparency
APSRTC will issue ‘Zero Fare Tickets’ branded with the Streeshakti logo, detailing travel routes and government subsidies. These tickets aim to highlight the financial benefits for women, fostering awareness of the scheme’s impact. The initiative is expected to benefit approximately 25 lakh women daily.

Technological Upgrades for Seamless Execution
To ensure efficiency, APSRTC has upgraded its TIMS machines and UTS software for faster issuance of zero-fare tickets. These enhancements streamline the ticketing process, minimizing delays for passengers and staff. The corporation has prioritized operational readiness to handle increased ridership.

Comprehensive Staff Training Program
Starting today, APSRTC is conducting training for drivers, conductors, and depot staff to implement the Streeshakti scheme effectively. The training focuses on issuing zero-fare tickets and managing updated ticketing systems. This ensures smooth operations across all 11,200 buses, 73% of which are non-premium.

Financial and Environmental Considerations
The scheme, estimated to cost over ₹200 crore monthly, includes government reimbursement to APSRTC for sustainability. Chief Minister Naidu has also directed the adoption of AC electric buses and in-house power generation to reduce costs and promote eco-friendly transport.

Broader Impact on Women’s Empowerment
By eliminating travel costs, Streeshakti aims to boost women’s access to education, employment, and essential services. Inspired by similar schemes like Karnataka’s Shakti, it seeks to enhance gender equity while addressing operational challenges like overcrowding and safety.
