Celebration Descends Into Chaos
What was meant to be a historic celebration for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) after winning their first IPL title ended in horror. A massive stampede during the victory event at Bengaluru’s Chinnaswamy Stadium on Wednesday claimed 11 lives and left over 50 people hospitalized.
RCB had lifted the Dream Cup in Ahmedabad on Tuesday night. The squad returned to Bengaluru by Wednesday afternoon and was met with euphoric scenes at HAL Airport. Karnataka officials planned a grand felicitation ceremony at Vidhan Soudha and later at Chinnaswamy Stadium. The excitement quickly turned into panic as uncontrolled crowds overwhelmed the venue.
Sequence of Events and Crowd Surge
RCB players arrived at HAL Airport at 2:45 PM and were taken in official buses to Vidhan Soudha. A brief felicitation was held under the leadership of Governor Thawar Chand Gehlot, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, and Deputy CM DK Shivakumar.
At around 4:00 PM, heavy rains added to the congestion outside the stadium. Fans, many of whom had been waiting since noon, began rushing toward the gates. The stampede occurred at the back entrance, well before the team even entered the stadium.
By 6:10 PM, RCB made their way into the stadium and a 20-minute celebration ensued. Meanwhile, emergency services struggled to assist the injured.
Stadium Capacity Breached
The Chinnaswamy Stadium can officially host 35,000 people. However, more than three lakh fans flooded the surrounding areas, overwhelming police and security arrangements. Authorities admitted they had not anticipated such an intense turnout.
Karnataka’s Home Department stated that fan mismanagement, poor weather, and lack of alternate arrangements caused the disaster.

According to the Health Department:

- Estimated Total Injured (including minor cases): Over 400
Victims included several teenagers and young adults. Names confirmed include Divyanshi (13), Divya (26), Shravan (17), Bhumika (20), Sahana (19), Chinmayi (19), Poorna Chandra (35), and Sharath (17). Three remain unidentified.
Political Condolences and Government Action
President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi expressed their condolences. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah labeled the incident “deeply unfortunate” and announced ex gratia compensation of ₹10 lakh per deceased family.
He confirmed the state will bear full treatment expenses of the injured and ordered a judicial inquiry into the mishap. He also assured that accountability would be fixed on those responsible for crowd mismanagement.
Opposition Blames Government Lapses
Opposition leader R. Ashok criticized the lack of strategic planning. He argued that allowing a procession from HAL Airport to Vidhan Soudha could have dispersed the crowds more effectively and reduced the concentration near the stadium.
Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy termed the incident “avoidable,” pointing to administrative and police failure. BJP’s Bandi Sanjay also condemned the negligence on social media platform X.
Grief Across States
Leaders across party lines, including AP Governor Abdul Nazeer and Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu, conveyed their sorrow. Both extended condolences to the bereaved families and wished for a swift recovery for the injured.
