ANDHRA PRADESH: MP Mithun Reddy’s Petition: Court Permits Special Jail Facilities
Court Grants Special Amenities
The Vijayawada Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) court has sanctioned special facilities for YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) MP PV Mithun Reddy, detained in connection with the Andhra Pradesh liquor scam. Following a petition highlighting inadequate jail conditions, the court mandated provisions to ensure the MP’s comfort during judicial custody.
Specified Provisions Ordered
The court’s directive includes access to a bed, blanket, pillow, purified water bottles, a cooler, writing materials, a table, and a television, subject to availability. Mithun Reddy is required to cover the costs of paper, water, and food, with an undertaking letter mandatory for external food supplies.
Medical and Visitation Rights
The ACB court emphasized the provision of medical facilities within Rajamahendravaram Central Prison, with external medical care permitted if necessary. The court further allowed legal consultations three times weekly and family visits twice weekly to uphold the MP’s rights and responsibilities.
Remand Extension for Accused
The court extended the judicial remand of 11 accused in the liquor scam case, including Mithun Reddy, until August 1, 2025. The Special Investigation Team (SIT) presented the accused, including notable figures like Chevireddy Bhaskar Reddy and Sajjala Sridhar Reddy, following the expiry of their initial remand period.
Legal Proceedings and Context
Arguments from both the SIT and defense counsel were heard, with the court reserving its verdict on the facilities petition earlier in the day. The liquor scam, involving alleged financial irregularities between 2019 and 2024, has drawn significant attention, with Mithun Reddy named as a key accused.
