NATIONAL: Jaishankar’s Convoy Security Breach in London: India Demands Action from UK

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has strongly reacted to the recent security breach involving External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar’s convoy in London.

While acknowledging the UK’s condemnation of the incident, the MEA stressed that the credibility of such statements would be measured by the actions taken against those responsible.

India Expresses Deep Concern
During a press briefing, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated that India had conveyed its “deep concern” to UK authorities over the breach, highlighting the “larger context” behind the incident.

He pointed out that separatist and extremist groups in the UK have been given undue freedom, enabling them to intimidate, threaten, and disrupt India’s diplomatic activities.

Jaiswal further added that while India has noted the UK Foreign Office’s statement condemning the incident, the sincerity of this response will be judged based on the concrete steps taken against the culprits, both in this case and in previous instances of similar disruptions.

Khalistani Protesters Target Jaishankar’s Convoy
The security breach took place outside Chatham House in London, where Jaishankar was attending an event during his official visit to the UK from March 4-9.

A group of pro-Khalistan extremists staged a protest, waving flags, chanting slogans, and directly confronting the minister’s convoy as he left the venue.

Reports suggest that pro-Khalistan supporters had also gathered outside the event location to demonstrate against Jaishankar’s visit, raising concerns over the UK government’s handling of separatist activities on its soil.

UK Condemns the Incident, Pledges Diplomatic Security
In response, the UK Foreign Office issued a statement strongly condemning the security breach.

It reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety of all diplomatic visitors and affirmed that while peaceful protests are a democratic right, any attempts to intimidate, threaten, or disrupt public events are “completely unacceptable.” The Metropolitan Police reportedly acted swiftly to control the situation.

MEA Labels It a “Misuse of Democratic Freedoms”
The Indian government, through the MEA, has called the incident a clear “misuse of democratic freedoms” by a small group of separatists and extremists.

The ministry condemned their provocative actions and emphasized that such disruptions are unacceptable. It urged the UK government to uphold its diplomatic obligations and take necessary steps to prevent such security breaches in the future.

India Awaits Concrete Action
While diplomatic statements have been made, India expects strong action against those responsible for the security lapse. The incident has once again raised concerns over the protection of Indian officials abroad and the growing influence of extremist elements in the UK.

The coming days will determine whether the UK follows through on its commitments or if such incidents continue unchecked.
