ANDHRA PRADESH: Jagan Charged in Singaiah Death Case in Palnadu

Incident Overview
On June 18, 2025, Cheeli Singaiah, a 70-year-old resident of Rentapalla village, Palnadu district, tragically lost his life during a visit by former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy. Authorities allege that a vehicle in Reddy’s convoy struck Singaiah, leading to his death.

Legal Action Initiated
The Nallapadu police have named Reddy as the A2 accused in the case, charging him under Section 49 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for culpable homicide. Alongside Reddy, his driver, personal assistant, and two others face charges based on CCTV and drone footage linking the incident to Reddy’s Fortuner vehicle, bearing registration AP 40 DH 2349.

Police Investigation
The implicated vehicle has been seized for forensic examination. Guntur District Superintendent of Police S. Satish Kumar confirmed that the investigation is intensifying, with security lapses under scrutiny. The chief security officer and protection staff have been summoned for questioning.

Notice Served
On June 24, 2025, Nallapadu police visited the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) office in Tadepalli to serve notices to Reddy. The office secretary, Appireddy, received the documents on Reddy’s behalf, formalizing his involvement in the ongoing probe.

Political Repercussions
The case has sparked a political controversy, with Reddy alleging inadequate security arrangements by the current government led by Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu. Conversely, Andhra Pradesh Home Minister Anitha accused Reddy of criminal negligence and exploiting the tragedy for political mileage.

  • Evidence: CCTV and drone footage identified Reddy’s vehicle as the one involved in the accident.
  • Charges: Reddy and aides face culpable homicide charges under BNS Section 49.
  • Vehicle Seizure: The Fortuner (AP 40 DH 2349) is under police custody for further analysis.
  • Investigation: Security protocols and convoy management are being reviewed.

Current Status
The investigation remains active, with police analyzing circumstantial and video evidence. Reddy has not yet responded formally to the notices, and the case continues to draw significant attention due to its political implications and the tragic loss of life.
