
National: India’s Photonic Radar to Unmask Stealth Aircraft

India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has developed the nation’s first photonic radar, a pioneering system leveraging light-based technology. Designed at Bengaluru’s Electronics and Radar Development Establishment (LRDE), it positions India among elite nations with advanced stealth detection capabilities.

Countering Stealth Threats
Stealth aircraft, such as China’s J-20 and Pakistan’s drones, rely on radar-evading designs. Photonic radars neutralize these by exploiting photonic integrated circuits (PICs) for high-sensitivity detection, rendering traditional stealth coatings ineffective.
Extensive Trials Planned
DRDO will commence comprehensive trials by late 2025, testing the radar in diverse environments like high-altitude and coastal regions. Integration with platforms like Su-30 MKI, Rafale, and Tejas fighters, as well as the Akashteer system, is underway.
