Final Match Collapse

Pakistan dominated the Under-19 Asia Cup final in Dubai, posting a massive 347 for 8 in 50 overs, powered by opener Sameer Minhas’ brilliant 172 off 113 balls. India, who had won all previous matches, faltered badly in the chase and were bowled out for just 156 in 26.2 overs.

The 191-run defeat marked Pakistan’s second U19 Asia Cup title and their first outright win. Key Indian batters, including captain Ayush Mhatre and young star Vaibhav Suryavanshi, failed under pressure.

BCCI’s Response

The Board of Control for Cricket in India took the loss seriously during an online Apex Council meeting on December 22. Officials decided on a detailed performance review to identify shortcomings ahead of the upcoming Under-19 World Cup in early 2026.

They plan to seek explanations from team management, including head coach Hrishikesh Kanitkar and captain Ayush Mhatre. This step goes beyond standard procedures, reflecting concerns over the team’s sudden dip in form.

On-Field Tensions

The match saw heated moments, particularly after dismissals by Pakistan pacer Ali Raza. Ayush Mhatre and Vaibhav Suryavanshi reacted strongly to aggressive send-offs, leading to verbal exchanges that went viral on social media.

Pakistan team mentor Sarfaraz Ahmed later criticized India’s conduct as unethical. PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi announced plans to formally complain to the ICC about the “provocative behaviour.”

Player Conduct Scrutiny

Videos captured Mhatre charging back in anger and Suryavanshi making gestures, including pointing to his shoe. While both sides engaged in sledging, the incidents drew attention to sportsmanship at youth level.

BCCI may address these behavioural aspects internally as part of the review. The focus remains on preparing a disciplined unit for the global event.

Looking Ahead

This heavy loss serves as a wake-up call for the talented Indian side, featuring IPL-signed players like Mhatre and Suryavanshi. Correcting batting fragility and handling pressure will be key priorities.

Pakistan’s comprehensive victory boosts their confidence, while India aims to bounce back stronger in the World Cup.
