National: Assam CM’s Bold Call for Bangladesh ‘Surgery’ Amid Border Fears

Sarma’s Stark Warning

In a recent media event, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma voiced deep concerns over India’s ties with Bangladesh. He argued that diplomatic efforts have reached their limit, and stronger actions, likened to surgery, are now essential to safeguard national interests.

Sarma highlighted the volatile situation in Bangladesh, warning that ongoing unrest could spill over and threaten India’s security. His comments come at a time when bilateral relations are strained, prompting calls for decisive measures.

Focus on Chicken’s Neck

Central to Sarma’s remarks is the Siliguri Corridor, known as Chicken’s Neck, a narrow strip of land connecting India’s mainland to its northeastern states. This 20-22 kilometer wide area in West Bengal is strategically vital, bordered by Nepal, Bhutan, and Bangladesh.

Military experts have long feared potential attacks here could isolate the Seven Sisters states: Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, and Tripura. Sarma stressed the need to protect this corridor from external threats, especially amid regional instability.

Yunus’s Controversial Statements

Bangladesh’s interim leader Muhammad Yunus sparked outrage earlier this year during a visit to China. He described the Seven Sisters as landlocked regions reliant on Bangladesh for sea access, positioning his country as a key guardian and inviting Chinese investments.

Indian officials viewed these remarks as provocative, potentially encouraging foreign influence in the sensitive area. Yunus’s comments were seen as undermining India’s sovereignty, fueling debates on geopolitical ambitions in South Asia.

Historical Tensions and Doklam Link

The Chicken’s Neck vulnerability ties into broader India-China border disputes, including the 2017 Doklam standoff. Chinese road-building attempts in Bhutanese territory near the corridor led to a 72-day confrontation, halted by Indian intervention.

Sarma referenced this history to underline the unfinished agenda of securing the region. He suggested that without firm action, supply lines to northeastern troops could be disrupted in any conflict.

Demographic Concerns in Assam

Sarma also addressed internal challenges, noting that about 40 percent of Assam’s population traces origins to Bangladesh. He described the state as sitting on a powder keg due to demographic shifts, urging vigilance against illegal migration.

Recent operations like Sindoor have demonstrated India’s resolve, Sarma added. He countered Bangladeshi claims by pointing out vulnerabilities in their own narrow corridors, emphasizing mutual risks.

Implications for Regional Stability

These statements reflect growing anxieties over India’s eastern frontiers, where China’s Chumbi Valley looms close. Analysts warn that any escalation could reshape alliances in the region, affecting trade and security.

As tensions simmer, calls for dialogue persist alongside demands for robust defenses. Sarma’s analogy of surgery over medicine highlights a shift toward proactive strategies in foreign policy.
