A serious allegation of sexual assault at the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Calcutta has taken a dramatic turn. The complainant’s father has publicly refuted claims of rape, asserting his daughter was injured in an accident, not assaulted.
Father’s Account of Incident
The father reported receiving a call from his daughter around 9:40 PM on July 11, 2025, stating she had fallen from a vehicle and lost consciousness. He later found her admitted to SSKM Hospital’s neurology department, where she denied any assault occurred.
Allegations and Police Action
The complainant, a psychologist, alleged she was lured to the IIM-C boys’ hostel under the pretext of a counseling session, where she was drugged and raped. Based on her FIR, Kolkata Police arrested a second-year MBA student, charging him under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
Father’s Claims of Coercion
The father alleged that police pressured his daughter to file rape charges, contradicting her account of the incident. He emphasized she reported no mistreatment and had no connection to the accused student.
Special Investigation Team Formed
Kolkata Police have established a nine-member Special Investigation Team (SIT), led by an assistant commissioner, to probe the allegations thoroughly. The team is collecting forensic evidence and reviewing CCTV footage from the campus.
State Women’s Commission Involvement
The West Bengal Commission for Women has taken suo motu cognizance of the case, filing a case to investigate the incident independently. However, the complainant’s refusal to undergo a medical examination has raised questions about the allegations.
Court Proceedings and Defense
The accused, remanded to police custody until July 19, 2025, appeared in Alipore Court, where his lawyer argued the campus’s high-security measures suggest inconsistencies in the allegations. The defense claims the encounter may have been consensual.
