UN Chief Raises Alarm Over Humanitarian Collapse

At a press briefing held at the United Nations headquarters in New York, Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed grave concern over the deteriorating humanitarian conditions in Gaza. He stated that the conflict has now reached its “worst phase,” with civilians bearing the brunt of the ongoing war.

According to Guterres, of nearly 400 humanitarian aid trucks cleared to enter Gaza, only 115 have successfully reached the besieged region. “The people of Gaza should be receiving aid in waves, not in trickles,” he warned. “They are barely surviving on spoonfuls of assistance.”

WHO Condemns Use of Food as a Weapon

The World Health Organization (WHO) echoed these concerns during its annual assembly. Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus delivered an emotional address denouncing the blockade of humanitarian aid and the weaponization of essential supplies.

“I understand the trauma, the starvation, and the psychological scars that war inflicts,” he said. “Denying food and medical care in a war zone is morally indefensible and legally questionable. This conflict serves neither side. A peaceful resolution is not only urgent but also inevitable if both sides are to regain their humanity.”

Civilian Toll Mounts in Gaza

The Gaza Health Ministry reported that at least 60 civilians were killed within a 24-hour period due to ongoing Israeli airstrikes. The rising death toll adds to the mounting international pressure on Israel to de-escalate its military campaign and ensure unimpeded humanitarian access.

Medical infrastructure, already overwhelmed by the influx of wounded and shortage of supplies, is said to be operating at the edge of collapse. International aid agencies have warned of an impending catastrophe if unrestricted access to food, water, and medicine is not restored immediately.

Call for Diplomatic and Moral Restraint

Both UN and WHO officials emphasized that sustained violence will only further destabilize the region. The current trajectory, they argue, is unsustainable and inhumane. Guterres reiterated the need for a ceasefire, urging all parties to return to the negotiation table.

Dr. Tedros made a direct appeal to the Israeli leadership: “Show compassion. Show leadership. Let humanity prevail.”
