TELANGANA: Erragadda Hospital Food Scare: 1 Dead, Dozens Sick
Government Takes Swift Action
The Telangana state government has initiated strict action following a severe food contamination incident at the Erragadda Institute of Mental Health, Hyderabad. One patient died while 92 others fell ill after consuming food allegedly tainted during a special meal served on Telangana Formation Day.
Key Officials Suspended and Contractor Removed
Hospital Superintendent Dr. Anita confirmed that the hospital’s food supply contractor, Jaipal Reddy, has been immediately removed. Resident Medical Officer (RMO) Dr. Padmaja has been placed under suspension for alleged negligence in ensuring food safety.
Death of Patient Triggers Alert
The situation escalated when Karan, a 30-year-old patient from Bhupalapally admitted to the Discharge Committee (DC) ward, died early Tuesday morning. He had developed severe symptoms, including vomiting, diarrhea, and high fever, after Monday’s meal. His death brought the crisis to public attention.
Formation Day Meal Under Scrutiny
On June 3, to mark Telangana Formation Day, patients were served a special menu including rice, curry, bananas, eggs, and sugar. By evening, several patients from both the DC ward and court wards began reporting symptoms of food poisoning. Medical officers treated 71 patients onsite, while 18 critical cases were shifted to Osmania General Hospital.
Suspected Contamination of Water Supply
Officials are also investigating potential contamination in the drinking water supply. It was reported that water from RO plants, possibly mixed with untreated sewage, was being served to patients. Water was stored in steel containers and consumed through shared glasses—raising hygiene concerns.
Samples Sent for Laboratory Analysis
Both food and water samples have been dispatched to accredited laboratories for comprehensive testing. A special medical team from Osmania General Hospital is stationed at the mental health facility to monitor the remaining patients, who are currently reported to be stable.
Administrative Measures Taken
- Food contractor Jaipal Reddy removed
- RMO Dr. Padmaja suspended
- Emergency response unit deployed from Osmania Hospital
- Water supply system and food services placed under review
Health Officials Assure Accountability
The Telangana Health Department has pledged transparency and strict accountability. A special committee has been tasked with submitting a detailed report within 72 hours. Criminal negligence charges are being considered based on lab test results.
Calls for Institutional Reform
Public health experts and mental health activists have urged the government to overhaul hygiene and sanitation protocols in all state-run hospitals, particularly mental health institutions. They highlighted the need to prioritize the dignity, safety, and health rights of psychiatric patients.
Investigation Underway
The full extent of negligence, whether in food preparation, water treatment, or administrative oversight, will be determined by the ongoing investigation. Further action, including criminal prosecution, may follow based on the findings.
