Shocking Breach of Trust
Two Delhi Police sub-inspectors, Ankur Malik and Neha Punia, have been apprehended for allegedly embezzling over Rs 2 crore recovered from cybercrime cases. The duo, entrusted with upholding the law, orchestrated a calculated scheme to divert funds meant for victims.
Strategic Deception Uncovered
Ankur Malik, stationed at the Northeast district’s Cyber Thana, manipulated judicial processes to release seized funds by using fraudulent court orders and fictitious complainants. The misappropriated funds were funneled into accounts controlled by their associates.
Coordinated Disappearance
Malik took a seven-day medical leave in March 2025 and failed to return, while Punia, posted at GTB Enclave, vanished simultaneously. Investigations revealed their close relationship, formed during 2021 training, which underpinned their meticulously planned fraud.
Lavish Escapades
With the illicit funds, the pair embarked on extravagant trips to Goa, Manali, and Kashmir, living luxuriously while evading authorities. They converted cash into gold to obscure the money trail, intending to establish new identities in Indore.
Intensive Police Pursuit
Delhi Police, leveraging technical surveillance and intelligence, tracked the fugitives to a residential society in Indore. A coordinated raid on July 18, 2025, led to their arrest after a four-month manhunt.
Significant Recoveries
Authorities seized:
- Gold worth over Rs 1 crore
- Rs 12 lakh in cash
- 11 mobile phones
- A laptop and three ATM cards
Three accomplices—Mohammad Ilyas, Aafi alias Monu, and Shadab—were also arrested for facilitating the illegal transfers.
Legal Proceedings Initiated
Three FIRs have been filed under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for cheating, forgery, and criminal conspiracy. The accused are under interrogation and will face judicial proceedings as the investigation continues.
