Opposition figures have lambasted the Election Commission for evading accountability on the expedited voter list revisions in Bihar and persistent claims of electoral malfeasance.
They assert that the body has abdicated its mandate to ensure impartiality in democratic processes.
During a media interaction post the Sunday conclave with the Commission, leaders highlighted unaddressed grievances, including anomalous voter surges in Maharashtra, discrepancies in Mahadevapura’s rolls, and the erasure of polling footage.
Allegations Against Chief Election Commissioner
Congress parliamentarian Gaurav Gogoi decried Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s reticence on substantive queries, accusing him of retaliatory rhetoric instead of empirical rebuttals.
Gogoi contended that the Commission is compromised by partisan functionaries, neglecting opposition-submitted evidence.
He further indicated that appropriate measures, including potential impeachment proceedings against the CEC, would be pursued judiciously.
Demand for Affidavit from Election Commission
The Congress party rebuffed the CEC’s directive for Rahul Gandhi to furnish an affidavit substantiating rigging claims within seven days, deeming such allegations unfounded absent proof.
Conversely, they urged the Commission to affirm the voter registry’s accuracy via a Supreme Court affidavit.
Senior Congress operative Pawan Khera censured Kumar for adopting rhetoric akin to a Bharatiya Janata Party advocate, undermining institutional neutrality.
Calls for Parliamentary Scrutiny
DMK’s Tiruchi Shiva questioned the governing coalition’s resistance to deliberating Bihar’s voter revisions in legislative forums, vowing exhaustive legal recourse to rectify electoral anomalies.
Shiv Sena (UBT) representative Arvind Sawant described the CEC’s demeanor as anomalous, likening it to partisan advocacy on behalf of the ruling entity.
Perceptions of Institutional Bias
CPM’s John Brittas portrayed the Commission’s stance as adversarial toward opposition coalitions, labeling it a surrogate arm of the administration exhibiting prejudicial conduct.
Samajwadi Party’s Ramgopal Yadav refuted the commission’s narrative of unsubstantiated accusations, citing an unheeded 2022 affidavit on the disenfranchisement of 18,000 Uttar Pradesh voters.

Trinamool Congress’s Mahua Moitra invoked West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s alerts on counterfeit voter credentials, decrying the Commission’s inaction and advocating sanctions against prior electoral overseers implicated in fraudulent registries.
