HEALTH DESK: Alarming Cancer Signs in Maharashtra Women
Early Detection Initiative Uncovers Concerns
A comprehensive cancer screening program under the Sanjeevani scheme in Hingoli district, Maharashtra, has revealed troubling health trends. Initiated by the District Collector, the program aims to detect cancer at nascent stages to improve treatment outcomes.
Extensive Screening Yields Critical Data
Since March 8, health authorities have surveyed 292,996 individuals, focusing primarily on women. A targeted questionnaire identified 14,542 women exhibiting symptoms suggestive of cancer, prompting further diagnostic evaluations.
Confirmed Cases Highlight Urgency
Post-screening tests confirmed three cases of cervical cancer, one case of breast cancer, and eight cases of oral cancer. These findings underscore the critical need for early intervention to mitigate disease progression.
Ongoing Efforts in Rural Healthcare
To address rural healthcare gaps, medical camps and screenings are being conducted across Hingoli. The state has no plans for a dedicated women’s cancer hospital but is prioritizing accessible diagnostics in existing facilities.
Enhanced Treatment Infrastructure
Cancer treatment is being integrated into district hospitals and medical colleges. Day care chemotherapy centers are operational in eight district hospitals, with plans for statewide expansion to ensure broader access.
Specialized Support from Experts
‘Cancer Warriors,’ trained by Tata Memorial Hospital, will visit 11 hospitals bi-monthly alongside oncology experts. This initiative strengthens the region’s capacity to manage cancer cases effectively.
