Hyderabad: Flames Ignite Crackdown: Hyderabad’s Bus Safety Blitz

The devastating bus fire near Kurnool on October 24, 2025, that claimed at least 19 lives has prompted Telangana’s transport authorities to launch urgent safety checks across Hyderabad. In the wake of the tragedy, where a Hyderabad-Bengaluru private bus collided with a bike and burst into flames, Regional Transport Office (RTO) teams have zeroed in on private travel operators to prevent similar horrors.

Travelers and operators alike feel the weight of this response, a grim reminder that complacency on the roads can turn journeys fatal in an instant.

Targeted Drives in Key Areas

RTO officials ramped up surprise inspections in high-traffic spots, starting with Ranga Reddy district’s Bandlaguda and Vanasthalipuram neighborhoods. Over 60 private buses came under scrutiny, revealing lapses that led to firm actions.

  • Twelve vehicles faced cases for regulatory violations, including expired permits and inadequate maintenance.
  • Eight buses lacking proper documentation or safety features were impounded on the spot and towed to nearby police stations for further review.

These efforts caught operators off guard, underscoring the need for constant vigilance in urban transport hubs.

Extended Reach Across Districts

The checks didn’t stop at city limits. In Sangareddy district, teams swarmed the Muthangi ORR Exit-3 and Gaganpahad near Rajendranagar, focusing on buses streaming in from Andhra Pradesh.

Inspectors halted vehicles to verify critical equipment, ensuring no repeats of the Kurnool jammed doors or missing exits. At LB Nagar’s Chintalkunta, additional cases were filed against non-compliant operators, adding to the tally of enforced accountability.

Passengers boarding these routes now travel with a renewed sense of caution, their faith in the system tested by recent events.

Commitment to Passenger Protection

Authorities stressed that these measures prioritize rider safety above all, warning that violations will invite unwavering penalties. Fire safety gear, medical kits, and emergency protocols formed the core of every inspection, with no room for shortcuts.

Ongoing drives promise to persist in the days ahead, as Telangana Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar called for a deeper inquiry to safeguard inter-state travel.

In the shadow of loss, this proactive stance offers a sliver of hope, but only if it sparks lasting reforms.
