US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick has stirred controversy with his recent remarks, predicting that India will soon seek forgiveness and pursue a trade agreement with the United States.
In a television interview, he suggested that within one to two months, India would return to the negotiating table, compelled by economic realities.
Lutnick’s statements follow President Donald Trump’s sarcastic social media post on Truth Social, where he implied that India, alongside Russia, has aligned with China, wishing them a “prosperous future.”
The commerce secretary’s rhetoric escalates tensions, framing India’s current trade and geopolitical stance as unsustainable bravado.
Tariff Threats and Conditions
Lutnick outlined stringent conditions to avoid a hefty 50 percent tariff on Indian exports, including halting Russian oil purchases, exiting the BRICS coalition, and endorsing the US dollar.
He criticized India’s increased reliance on discounted Russian oil, which surged from under 2 percent to 40 percent of its imports, calling it opportunistic and “just plain wrong.”
He warned that failure to align with US interests would lead to prolonged economic consequences, emphasizing the US’s dominance as the world’s largest consumer market with a $30 trillion economy. Lutnick argued that nations like India and China are inevitably drawn to the US market, as “the customer is always right.”
