NATIONAL: India Women Triumph in Historic T20 Series Win
Maiden T20 Series Victory
The Indian women’s cricket team achieved a historic milestone by securing their first-ever bilateral T20 International (T20I) series win against England, clinching a 3-1 lead in the five-match series. The decisive six-wicket victory came in the fourth T20I at Old Trafford, Manchester, on July 9, 2025. This marks a significant breakthrough, as India had previously lost all six multi-game T20I series against England, with their only prior win being a one-off match in Derby in 2006.
Dominant Bowling Performance
England, opting to bat first after winning the toss, struggled against India’s disciplined bowling attack, managing only 126/7 in their 20 overs. Sophia Dunkley (Sophia Dunkley) top-scored with 22 runs, but the Indian spinners and fielders kept the hosts under pressure. Radha Yadav (Radha Yadav) and N Shree Charani (N Shree Charani) claimed two wickets each, while Deepti Sharma (Deepti Sharma) and Amanjot Kaur (Amanjot Kaur) took one apiece, with sharp fielding restricting England’s total.
Clinical Batting Chase
Chasing 127, India’s batters delivered a composed performance, reaching the target in 17 overs with four wickets in hand. Smriti Mandhana (Smriti Mandhana) led with 32 runs, supported by Shafali Verma (Shafali Verma) with 31, Harmanpreet Kaur (Harmanpreet Kaur) with 26, and Jemimah Rodrigues (Jemimah Rodrigues) with an unbeaten 24. The team’s steady approach ensured a comfortable victory, sealing the series.
Series Journey and Key Moments
India started the series with a commanding 97-run win at Trent Bridge, followed by a 24-run victory in Bristol, showcasing their batting and bowling prowess. Despite a narrow five-run loss in a thrilling third T20I at The Oval, the team regrouped to dominate the fourth match. This series win is a crucial step in India’s preparations for the 2026 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in England.
Standout Contributions
Smriti Mandhana, who captained the side in the first match due to Harmanpreet Kaur’s injury, set the tone with a record-breaking 112 in the opener. Debutant N Shree Charani impressed with 4/12 in the first T20I, while Radha Yadav and Deepti Sharma consistently troubled England’s batters. Harmanpreet Kaur, back as captain, praised the team’s preparation and execution.
Looking Ahead
With the series secured, India now heads to Edgbaston, Birmingham, for the fifth and final T20I on July 12, 2025. The victory boosts India’s confidence as they aim to fine-tune their squad ahead of next year’s World Cup. This historic achievement highlights the team’s growing strength in women’s T20 cricket.
