Amaravati: AP’s Rural Feast: Sankranti Meal Initiative Unveiled

Government Plans Festive Launch

The Andhra Pradesh administration is gearing up to introduce 70 new Anna Canteens in rural zones as a special Sankranti offering for villagers. These facilities will open simultaneously across mandal centers and constituency hubs statewide.

Officials aim to wrap up ongoing construction by January 10, with operations starting between January 13 and 15. This move targets affordable nutrition for countryside residents during the harvest festival.

Building on Urban Success

Since the coalition government’s formation, 205 Anna Canteens have already been running in towns and cities. Over two lakh people daily enjoy three subsidized meals there, showing strong public uptake.

Each meal costs just five rupees, covering breakfast, lunch, and dinner options. Districts like Visakhapatnam, NTR, and Guntur report the highest footfall, highlighting the program’s popularity in bustling areas.

Response to Local Demands

Rural lawmakers pushed for similar setups in villages, prompting the approval of these additional 70 sites. This expansion addresses food access gaps in less urbanized spots.

So far, urban canteens have served more than 7.2 crore individuals, including 3.16 crore lunches, 2.62 crore breakfasts, and 1.42 crore dinners. The initiative underscores a commitment to welfare amid economic pressures.

Operational Details and Impact

Canteens will follow a model where meals are prepared hygienically and distributed efficiently. Subsidies ensure low costs without compromising quality, aiding workers, families, and the elderly.

Feedback systems and community oversight are planned to maintain standards. This rural rollout could boost local economies by creating jobs and supporting farmers through ingredient sourcing.

Future Outlook

With completion timelines set before the festival, the project aligns with broader digital and welfare goals. It reflects a hands-on approach to public needs, potentially inspiring similar efforts elsewhere.

As Sankranti approaches, villagers anticipate this timely support. The scheme blends tradition with modern governance, fostering community spirit during celebrations.
