NATIONAL: YouTuber Held for Espionage, Cleared of Terror Links?
Travel Blogger Arrested Over Espionage Allegations
Hisar-based travel content creator Jyoti Malhotra was arrested on May 16 under charges of espionage after it was discovered that she was in contact with Pakistani intelligence operatives (PIOs). The arrest was made under Sections 3 and 5 of the Official Secrets Act, 1923, and Section 152 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita Act.
According to the Hisar Police, while Malhotra maintained communication with PIOs, no evidence has emerged linking her to terrorist organizations or any activities intending to destabilize national security.
No Sensitive Information Breach or Radical Motive Found
Addressing the media, the Superintendent of Police (SP), Hisar, confirmed that Malhotra had no knowledge of Indian military operations and there was no indication that she shared sensitive defense-related data. Furthermore, authorities clarified that there was no evidence of any ideological radicalization, intent to convert religion, or plan to marry any Pakistani agent.
Digital Forensic Probe Underway
The police seized three mobile phones, a laptop, and other electronic devices belonging to Malhotra. In addition, two mobile phones of Harkirat Singh, a visa agent arrested on May 18, were also confiscated for digital analysis.
These devices have been sent to forensic laboratories for detailed examination. However, Hisar police clarified that no diary, which was allegedly seen in public domains, was recovered from Malhotra’s possession.
Central Agencies Involved in Interrogation
During her five-day police remand, officials from the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and Intelligence Bureau (IB) questioned Malhotra. Although these agencies participated in the inquiry, she remained under the custody of Hisar Police, and no formal handover to central authorities was made.
Contact with Pakistani Diplomatic Staff Revealed
Police spokesperson Vikas Kumar disclosed that Malhotra was in contact with Danish, a Pakistani High Commission official who was expelled from India on May 13. Their interaction spanned from November 2023 to March 2025.
Danish was reportedly attempting to develop her as an intelligence asset, and facilitated her connection with other YouTube influencers. Malhotra’s introduction to Danish took place at the Pakistan High Commission via Harkirat Singh during her visa application process.
Authorities Maintain Vigilance
While initial findings do not support allegations of terrorism, Malhotra continues to remain under investigation. The case emphasizes the increasing vulnerability of digital influencers to foreign intelligence networks and the importance of heightened digital literacy and national awareness in the public sphere.
