Hyderabad: Uppal Flyover Nears Completion by Dasara
Telangana’s Roads and Buildings Minister Komatireddy Venkat Reddy has announced that the long-delayed Uppal-Narapally Elevated Corridor in Hyderabad will be operational by Dasara 2025. The ₹626.76-crore project, stalled since 2017, aims to alleviate chronic traffic congestion on NH-163. The minister’s assurance follows a recent inspection with local authorities.
Ministerial Commitment to Timely Completion
On July 16, 2025, Minister Komatireddy, accompanied by Uppal MLA Bandaru Lakshma Reddy, reviewed the corridor’s progress, pledging its completion by Dasara. He acknowledged past delays but emphasized that ongoing efforts will ensure the six-lane flyover is ready within months. The announcement addresses years of commuter frustration in Hyderabad’s eastern corridor.
Project Overview and Objectives
Initiated in 2017 under the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), the 6-km elevated corridor aims to decongest Uppal junction and streamline travel toward Ghatkesar, Yadadri, and Warangal. With an estimated cost of ₹626.76 crore, the state government is funding land acquisition, ranging from ₹330 to ₹768 crore. The infrastructure promises faster, safer commutes for thousands.
Challenges Behind Delays
The project faced setbacks due to the withdrawal of contractor Gayatri Projects, coupled with issues in land acquisition and utility relocation, such as power lines and water pipelines. These hurdles halted progress, leaving commuters grappling with potholed roads and traffic jams. A new contractor has been appointed to expedite construction.
Impact on Hyderabad’s Traffic
The Uppal-Narapally corridor, once completed, will significantly reduce traffic bottlenecks at Uppal junction, a notorious choke point on NH-163. Commuters have endured prolonged inconvenience due to incomplete roads and dust pollution. The flyover’s activation will enhance connectivity to Hyderabad’s eastern suburbs and beyond.
Collaborative Efforts and Funding
The project is a joint effort between NHAI and the Telangana government, with the latter covering substantial land acquisition costs. Minister Komatireddy’s proactive oversight, including coordination with Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, underscores the state’s commitment to infrastructure development. The Dasara deadline reflects renewed momentum.
Community Benefits and Future Outlook
The corridor’s completion will benefit Hyderabad’s eastern residents and NH-163 travelers, reducing travel times and improving road safety. It aligns with broader initiatives like the Regional Ring Road (RRR) to enhance urban mobility. The state’s focus on timely execution signals robust infrastructure planning.
