Hyderabad: Telangana CM Directs Strategic Planning for Power Demand and Data City in Hyderabad
Record Power Demand and Future Projections
Despite a significant 9.8% increase in power demand this year, Telangana has successfully maintained uninterrupted and high-quality electricity supply, setting a national benchmark. Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy highlighted this achievement during a review meeting at his Jubilee Hills residence on May 16, 2025. The state’s daily peak power demand reached an all-time high of 17,162 megawatts (MW) in March 2025. Looking ahead, the demand is projected to rise to 18,138 MW by 2025-26 and 31,808 MW by 2034-35, necessitating immediate strategic planning.
Hyderabad to Host Data City
As Hyderabad emerges as a hub for Global Capability Centers (GCCs), the state plans to establish a dedicated Data City to meet the growing technological needs. CM Reddy emphasized the importance of scaling up power generation to support this initiative and the broader industrial growth in the region. The Data City is expected to significantly boost power consumption, making infrastructure upgrades critical.
Focus on Sustainable Energy Solutions
The Chief Minister outlined a vision for a “Future City” in Hyderabad, where all power lines will be underground, eliminating visible towers and poles. Smart poles will be piloted in key areas like the Secretariat, Necklace Road, and KBR Park. Additionally, solar power generation will be promoted along the Outer Ring Road (ORR), with potential expansion to footpaths and canals in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) area.
Strategic Planning for Industrial Growth
With Telangana attracting substantial investments, CM Reddy urged officials to prepare a roadmap for power supply that aligns with the state’s industrial development. The plan should account for increased consumption from industries, GCCs, metro rail systems, and electric vehicles. Substation capacities must be enhanced, and power lines modernized to meet future needs. The government is also focusing on green energy, pumped storage projects, and floating solar plants on reservoirs to ensure sustainable growth.
Coordination for New Development Zones
The Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) and power utilities have been instructed to collaborate on power supply for new radial roads and satellite townships from the ORR to the Regional Ring Road (RRR). This coordination is essential to support the state’s expanding infrastructure and urban development.
