Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu will inaugurate the ‘Sthree Shakti’ scheme, a landmark policy enabling free bus travel for women across the state. Announced by Transport Minister Mandipalli Ramprasad Reddy during a media conference at the State Secretariat, this initiative aims to enhance women’s mobility and economic empowerment.
Comprehensive Coverage Across Bus Services
The scheme encompasses a wide range of public transport options, ensuring accessibility for women in both rural and urban areas. Eligible services include:
- Palle Velugu
- Ultra Palle Velugu
- Metro Express
- City Ordinary
- Express buses
This extensive coverage allows women to travel freely anywhere within Andhra Pradesh, fostering inclusivity and connectivity.
Identification Requirements for Access
To avail of the free travel facility, women must present one of the following identification documents:
- Aadhaar card
- Voter ID
- Ration card
This streamlined verification process ensures ease of access while maintaining administrative efficiency.
Scale and Financial Commitment
The initiative will be implemented across 6,700 buses operated by the Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC). The state government has allocated Rs. 1,950 crore to fund this ambitious program, reflecting a significant investment in public welfare and gender equity.
Future-Ready with Electric Buses
In alignment with sustainable development goals, Chief Minister Naidu has directed the acquisition of 3,000 electric buses. Of these, 1,400 will be procured within the next two years, signaling a shift toward eco-friendly public transportation and reinforcing the state’s commitment to environmental stewardship.
