National: Sonam Raghuvanshi Case: A Honeymoon Murder Mystery Unfolds in Meghalaya

Shillong, June 9, 2025 – A honeymoon that began with dreams of romance in the scenic hills of Meghalaya has spiraled into a chilling tale of betrayal, murder, and a nationwide manhunt. The case of Raja and Sonam Raghuvanshi, a newlywed couple from Indore, Madhya Pradesh, has gripped India with its shocking twists and conflicting narratives. What started as a missing persons case has evolved into a complex murder investigation, with Sonam Raghuvanshi, the wife of the deceased, now at the center of allegations that she orchestrated her husband’s killing.

A Honeymoon Turned Tragic

Raja and Sonam Raghuvanshi, both residents of Indore, embarked on their honeymoon to Meghalaya in May 2025, just days after their arranged marriage. The couple was last seen in the popular tourist destination of Sohra (Cherrapunjee) on May 23. Their disappearance sparked concern among family members, who alerted authorities when the couple could not be reached. On June 2, the case took a grim turn when Raja’s decomposed body was discovered in a deep gorge near Weisawdong Falls in the East Khasi Hills district, showing signs of foul play. Sonam, however, remained missing, fueling speculation about her fate.

The Meghalaya Police launched an intensive investigation, initially treating the case as a missing persons inquiry. The discovery of Raja’s body shifted the focus to homicide, and the search for Sonam intensified. On June 7, a breakthrough came when a local tourist guide informed police that the couple had not been alone during their trip, hinting at the involvement of others. This tip marked a turning point in the investigation.

Sonam’s Reappearance and Arrest

On the night of June 8, Sonam Raghuvanshi resurfaced at a roadside dhaba in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh, where she used the dhaba owner’s phone to contact her brother, Govind. According to the dhaba operator, Sonam appeared dazed and requested to make a call around 1 AM. Shortly after, she was taken into custody at the Nandganj police station in Ghazipur, an event described by Meghalaya Police as a surrender under pressure. Sonam is now in the custody of Uttar Pradesh Police and is expected to be brought back to Meghalaya for further interrogation and court proceedings.

The Meghalaya Police have since arrested three other suspects—two from Indore and one from Lalitpur—in connection with the case. Authorities allege that Sonam hired these individuals to kill her husband, with one suspect, Raj Khushwaha, identified as the main conspirator. Call records reportedly show frequent communication between Sonam and Khushwaha, suggesting a preexisting affair that may have motivated the crime. However, one additional suspect remains at large, and police operations are ongoing in Madhya Pradesh to apprehend them.

A Family’s Denial and Demand for Justice

Sonam’s family, particularly her father, Devi Singh Raghuvanshi, has vehemently denied the allegations against her. In a statement to the media, Devi Singh claimed that his daughter is “100% innocent” and accused the Meghalaya Police of spreading false narratives to frame her. He emphasized that the marriage between Sonam and Raja was arranged with the consent of both families and questioned why Sonam would have any motive to harm her husband. “The police are getting distracted by the locals and giving false statements,” Devi Singh told reporters, appealing to Union Home Minister Amit Shah for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe to uncover the truth.

Sonam’s mother, Sangeeta, echoed these sentiments, calling the accusations “false” and urging a thorough investigation. Meanwhile, Raja’s brother, Vipul Raghuvanshi, disputed the police’s claim that Sonam surrendered, asserting that she was apprehended after her brother and the dhaba owner alerted authorities. Vipul maintained that the couple appeared happy in their marriage and joined the call for a CBI inquiry, citing concerns over the Meghalaya Police’s handling of the case. He pointed to CCTV footage and GPS data from a rented scooty, which reportedly indicated the presence of three to four individuals with the couple, a lead the family claims was not adequately pursued by local authorities.

Police Allegations and Contradictions

The Meghalaya Police, led by Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) Dalton P. Marak, have described the arrests as a “decisive development” in unraveling the case. According to a senior police official, Sonam confessed to orchestrating Raja’s murder, with the hired men carrying out the act during the couple’s honeymoon. The police narrative suggests a premeditated plot driven by Sonam’s alleged affair with Raj Khushwaha. However, the families’ distrust in the investigation has been compounded by Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav’s public appeal to Union Home Minister Amit Shah for a CBI probe, highlighting perceived negligence by the Meghalaya Police.

The case has also drawn attention due to its sensational nature, with media outlets comparing it to other high-profile cases of betrayal and murder. Posts on X reflect public shock and speculation, with some users questioning Sonam’s motives and others expressing sympathy for the families caught in the crossfire of conflicting claims. One user remarked, “Love turned into a nightmare… What was supposed to be the beginning of a new life ended in tragedy.”

A Nation Captivated

The Raja and Sonam Raghuvanshi case has captivated India, raising questions about trust, motive, and the complexities of human relationships. As the investigation continues, the Meghalaya Police have promised more revelations in the coming days, with Sonam’s interrogation expected to shed light on the events leading to Raja’s death. For now, the families of both Raja and Sonam remain united in their demand for a transparent investigation, while the public awaits answers to a mystery that has turned a honeymoon into a national tragedy.

The case underscores the challenges of multi-state investigations and the emotional toll on families seeking justice. Whether Sonam Raghuvanshi is a victim of circumstance or a mastermind of murder remains to be seen, but the truth lies buried in the hills of Meghalaya, waiting to be fully unearthed.
