Hyderabad: SIT Accelerates Telangana Phone Tapping Scandal Probe

The Special Investigation Team (SIT) in Telangana has intensified its investigation into the 2023 phone tapping case, uncovering extensive surveillance activities. With over 4,200 phones allegedly tapped, the probe has implicated high-profile figures, including political leaders and judges. The SIT’s aggressive pursuit of evidence signals a deepening inquiry into this surveillance scandal.

Expanding Scope of Investigation

The SIT has recorded statements from 257 victims, with approximately 200 Congress party leaders among those targeted. The probe has revealed that phones of politicians, governors, high court judges, media personnel, and industry leaders from IT and pharma sectors were monitored. The scale of the operation, linked to the former BRS regime, continues to grow as new victims come forward.

Key Figures Under Scrutiny

Former Special Intelligence Bureau (SIB) chief T. Prabhakar Rao, who returned from the U.S. in June 2025, and former DSP Praneeth Rao have been extensively questioned, yielding critical evidence. Prabhakar Rao’s alleged lack of cooperation has complicated the probe, while Praneeth Rao admitted to destroying hard disks under orders. The SIT is now summoning additional witnesses, including Chevella MP Konda Vishweshwar Reddy, for statements.

Political and Social Implications

The case, registered in March 2024, has sparked significant controversy, with allegations that the BRS government orchestrated widespread surveillance. Posts on X reflect public outrage, with figures like Y.S. Sharmila claiming their phones were tapped, some using coded language to relay information to former CM Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy. The scandal has fueled debates on privacy and political misuse of state machinery.

Evidence Destruction and Delays

SIT findings indicate that critical data was destroyed, with only November 2023 tapping records preserved, hindering the investigation. Prabhakar Rao’s prolonged absence in the U.S. delayed progress, but his return has accelerated the probe. The SIT is now racing to collect statements from remaining victims to build a comprehensive case.

Ongoing Efforts and Future Steps

The SIT plans to record additional statements, including from BJP MP Eatala Rajender, who alleged tapping during the Huzurabad by-election. With Interpol’s assistance previously sought to bring key suspects back, the investigation is nearing a critical phase. Authorities aim to hold accountable those responsible for the extensive privacy violations.
