NATIONAL: Railway Fare Hike: New Rates, Rules from July 1

Midnight Implementation of Revised Fares
The Railway Board has mandated new fare structures and ticketing regulations, effective from 12:00 AM on July 1, 2025. This revision, announced via a circular to all principal chief commercial managers, aims to streamline pricing across Indian Railways’ extensive network.

Aadhaar Mandate for Tatkal Bookings
Aadhaar authentication is now compulsory for booking Tatkal tickets through the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) platform, effective July 1, 2025. This measure seeks to enhance transparency and curb fraudulent bookings in the high-demand Tatkal category.

Fare Adjustments for Non-AC Classes
For second-class ordinary fares, no increase applies for journeys up to 500 km. Beyond this, fares rise by ₹5 for 501–1500 km, ₹10 for 1501–2500 km, and ₹15 for 2501–3000 km. Non-AC sleeper and first-class ordinary tickets see a modest hike of 0.5 paise per kilometer, while non-AC mail/express trains face a 1 paisa per kilometer increase.

AC Class Fare Revisions
All air-conditioned classes across various train types, including premier services like Rajdhani, Shatabdi, and Vande Bharat, will see a fare increase of 2 paise per kilometer. This adjustment reflects operational cost considerations while maintaining service quality.

Exemptions for Suburban and Reserved Tickets
No fare changes apply to suburban trains or monthly season tickets, safeguarding daily commuters. Additionally, tickets booked prior to July 1, 2025, remain unaffected by the hike, as do reservation charges and superfast surcharges.

Impact on Premier and Special Train Services
The fare revision extends to premium trains such as Duronto, Tejas, Humsafar, Amrit Bharat, and others, alongside AC Vistadome and Anubhav coaches. The updated fare structure has been integrated into the Passenger Reservation System (PRS), Unreserved Ticketing System (UTS), and manual ticketing processes.

System Upgrades for Enhanced Efficiency
By December 2025, Indian Railways plans to implement a new Passenger Reservation System, capable of processing 1.5 lakh tickets per minute, enhancing booking efficiency. This modernization aligns with the fare adjustments to support operational sustainability.

Balancing Costs and Passenger Interests
The Railway Ministry emphasizes that the fare hike, the first since 2014, is modest and aims to offset rising operational costs without burdening short-distance or daily commuters. The revisions ensure continued accessibility while supporting infrastructure upgrades.
