NATIONAL: Pilot Assault Shocker at Delhi T1 Sparks Outrage

A heated dispute at Delhi airport’s Terminal 1 turned violent on December 19, leaving a family holiday in tatters.

SpiceJet passenger Ankit Dewan claims an off-duty Air India Express pilot punched him during security screening.

Photos shared online show Dewan with facial injuries and bloodstains, drawing swift public attention.

What Triggered the Clash
Dewan, traveling with his wife, seven-year-old daughter, and four-month-old infant in a stroller, was directed by staff to use the priority lane for crew and passengers needing assistance.

Several airline employees allegedly cut ahead in the queue.

When Dewan spoke up, Captain Virender Sejwal reportedly called him “anpadh” (illiterate) and questioned his right to use the lane, escalating into verbal abuse before the alleged physical attack.

Family Trauma and Aftermath
The incident unfolded in front of Dewan’s children, leaving his daughter deeply frightened and traumatized.

He says he was left bleeding and later pressured to sign a document agreeing not to pursue complaints to avoid missing his flight.

Despite the ordeal, Dewan boarded his SpiceJet flight but sought medical help upon arrival, ruining planned family time.

Airline and Authority Response
Air India Express quickly condemned the behavior, removing the pilot from duties pending a full internal probe. The Ministry of Civil Aviation ordered his immediate grounding and a formal inquiry.

Delhi airport authorities expressed regret and escalated the matter for review, while police note no formal complaint has been filed yet.

Lingering Concerns

  • Should off-duty staff face stricter conduct rules at airports?
  • How can security lanes better separate passengers and crew to avoid confusion?
  • Will this prompt faster justice for victims in airport incidents?
