NATIONAL: Modi’s Global Quest Ignites Domestic Debate

Diplomatic Marathon Under Scrutiny
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent five-nation tour, spanning Ghana, Trinidad and Tobago, Argentina, Brazil, and Namibia from July 2 to 9, 2025, has ignited a firestorm of criticism from opposition leaders. The extensive itinerary, which included addresses to foreign parliaments and participation in the 17th BRICS Summit, aimed to bolster India’s global ties. However, domestic voices argue that such frequent international engagements sideline pressing national concerns.

Opposition’s Sharp Rebuke
Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh, dubbing Modi the “Super Premium Frequent Flier PM,” questioned the prioritization of foreign visits over domestic crises. Ramesh urged the Prime Minister to address unrest in Manipur, unresolved justice in the Pahalgam terrorist attack, and infrastructure failures in Gujarat. He also suggested Modi chair an all-party meeting to prepare for the upcoming monsoon session of Parliament, commencing July 21.

Punjab CM’s Provocative Remarks
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann intensified the critique, sarcastically highlighting Modi’s visits to nations with smaller populations compared to India’s 1.4 billion. Mann’s comments, mocking Modi’s pursuit of international accolades, drew sharp rebuke from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). The MEA condemned the remarks as “irresponsible” and “regrettable,” arguing they undermine India’s relations with friendly Global South nations.

MEA’s Diplomatic Defense
The MEA, without naming Mann, expressed dismay at statements from a high-ranking state official that belittle allied countries. The ministry emphasized that such remarks do not reflect India’s official stance and risk straining diplomatic ties. It underscored the strategic importance of Modi’s tour, which included historic visits to Ghana and Namibia, marking significant engagements after decades.

Modi’s Global Agenda
Modi’s tour focused on strengthening bilateral ties, promoting trade, energy, and defense cooperation, and reinforcing India’s commitment to the Global South. Key highlights included:

  • Addressing parliaments in Ghana, Trinidad and Tobago, and Namibia.
  • Receiving Ghana’s highest civilian honor, the Officer of the Order of the Star.
  • Attending the BRICS Summit in Brazil to advance multilateral cooperation.

Domestic Priorities in Question
Critics argue that Modi’s absence exacerbates unresolved domestic issues, including:

  • Ongoing unrest in Manipur, unvisited by the Prime Minister in over two years.
  • Delays in justice for the Pahalgam terrorist attack.
  • Infrastructure challenges, such as the recent Vadodara bridge collapse.
  • Calls for GST reforms to stimulate consumption and broader private investment.

Balancing Diplomacy and Duty
The controversy underscores a broader debate on balancing India’s global ambitions with domestic imperatives. While Modi’s engagements enhance India’s international stature, opposition leaders demand greater focus on internal challenges. The Prime Minister’s return offers a window to address these concerns before his next international venture.
