NATIONAL: Manipur’s Central Rule Extended to 2026
Parliamentary Approval Secured
The Indian Parliament has extended President’s Rule in Manipur for an additional six months, effective from August 13, 2025. Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s resolution, passed in both houses, ensures central governance until February 13, 2026.
Context of Imposition
President’s Rule was initially imposed on February 13, 2025, following the resignation of Chief Minister N. Biren Singh. The decision stemmed from prolonged ethnic violence and administrative collapse in the state.
Ongoing Ethnic Tensions
The extension responds to persistent unrest between Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities, which has claimed over 250 lives since May 2023. National Highways 2 and 37 remain disrupted, complicating essential supplies.
Central Government’s Strategy
The center aims to stabilize law and order, with joint security operations targeting insurgent groups. Reconciliation efforts continue, though civil society groups demand a return to elected governance.
Legislative Implications
Under Article 356, the state assembly remains in suspended animation, with Parliament assuming legislative authority. The extension aligns with constitutional provisions, requiring periodic parliamentary approval.
