ANDHRA PRADESH: Laurus Labs To Set Up ₹5000 Crore Mega Plant In Visakhapatnam

Laurus Labs, a prominent player in the pharmaceutical industry, has unveiled ambitious plans to bolster its presence in Andhra Pradesh.

During a recent investor conference call on October 23, 2025, CEO Dr. Satyanarayana Chava shared insights into a major expansion at Visakhapatnam.

This move signals a strategic focus on scaling up manufacturing capabilities amid growing global demand.

Land Allotment and Project Scope
The Andhra Pradesh government has allocated 531.77 acres of land in Anakapalli district, near Visakhapatnam, to Laurus Labs.

This prime industrial plot will host a cutting-edge pharmaceutical manufacturing complex built to international standards.

The initiative aims to integrate advanced technologies and foster innovation in drug production.

Construction will unfold in phases over the next eight years, starting with key infrastructure developments.

Early progress includes groundwork for a commercial-scale fermentation facility, with Phase 1 targeting 400 kiloliters capacity by late 2026.

Subsequent phases will expand this to over 1,000 kiloliters, enhancing biotech offerings.

Investment Commitment
Laurus Labs plans to pour approximately $600 million, equivalent to about Rs.5,000 crore, into this venture over the eight-year horizon.

This infusion builds on the company’s existing Rs.5,000 crore capital expenditure guidance for the next five years across its current facilities.

Dr. Chava emphasized flexibility, noting readiness to increase funding as project needs evolve and opportunities emerge.

A significant portion, around 60-70 percent, will target contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO) segments.

This aligns with rising client interest in specialized services, including advanced therapies and modalities.

Additional outlays, such as Rs.250 crore over three years for genes and antibody-drug conjugate facilities, underscore a forward-looking approach.

Key Strategic Adjustments
In a notable pivot, the company is redirecting its large-scale fermentation unit from Mysore, Karnataka, to Visakhapatnam.

Better infrastructure, including proximity to an existing unit and robust industrial support, drove this decision.

Waste treatment readiness issues in Mysore prompted the shift, allowing faster execution in Vizag.

Dr. Chava highlighted the rationale: “We are constructing on a fast-track basis a large fermentation capacity at Vizag instead of investing that in Mysore.” This consolidation centralizes operations, streamlining logistics and boosting efficiency for all fermentation-related activities.

Broader Implications for Visakhapatnam
Analysts view this development as a catalyst for Visakhapatnam’s emergence as a pharma hub.

The project promises to create around 6,350 direct jobs, injecting vitality into the local economy.

With enhanced capacities, the region could attract more investments, rivaling established centers like Hyderabad.

This expansion complements Laurus Labs’ footprint in Hyderabad, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Kanpur, where it already employs over 7,000 professionals.

By concentrating efforts in Vizag, the company positions itself to meet surging demands in generics, CDMO, and biotech markets.

Looking Ahead
Laurus Labs’ commitment reflects confidence in India’s pharma ecosystem and Andhra Pradesh’s supportive policies.

As global supply chains evolve, such initiatives could redefine regional dynamics.

Stakeholders watch closely, anticipating ripple effects on employment, exports, and technological advancement.
