A deadly wave of illness linked to adulterated toddy has swept through Kukatpally, Telangana, claiming five lives. The tragedy, centered around contaminated liquor from local compounds, has sparked outrage and urgent investigations.

Public Health Emergency
Between July 6 and 8, 2025, 44 individuals fell ill after consuming toddy from shops in Kukatpally’s Hydernagar, Indiranagar, and Bhagyanagar areas. Symptoms included acute gastroenteritis, dizziness, and severe dehydration, with many requiring immediate hospitalization.

Medical Response
Telangana Health Minister C. Damodar Rajanarasimha reported 31 victims under treatment at Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS), with 27 stable and four on dialysis. Six others are at Gandhi Hospital, and seven are in private facilities, some in critical condition.

Chemical Contamination Confirmed
Excise officials confirmed that toddy samples from implicated shops contained harmful chemicals, including suspected alprazolam and chloral hydrate. Laboratory tests revealed these nephrotoxic substances as the cause of kidney damage and fatalities.

Ongoing Investigation
The Excise Department has detained seven suspects and registered six cases, with five under Balanagar Excise Police and one under KPHB Police. Samples are undergoing forensic analysis to pinpoint the exact adulterants.

Official Actions
Authorities have sealed the offending toddy shops and destroyed 674 liters of contaminated stock. Task forces are conducting statewide inspections to curb illegal brewing and ensure compliance with safety standards.

Political Outcry
Former Minister K.T. Rama Rao demanded Rs. 20 lakh compensation for each deceased victim’s family and enhanced medical care for survivors. He urged preventive measures to avert future tragedies.

BJP’s Call for Accountability
BJP Telangana President N. Ramachandra Rao alleged systemic oversight failures, citing past incidents of toddy adulteration. He demanded Rs. 10 lakh for deceased families, Rs. 1 lakh for victims, and daily excise inspections.

Systemic Issues Exposed
Locals and activists have criticized the Excise Department for lax monitoring, alleging political collusion. Data shows 39,176 toddy-related incidents in Telangana since 2014, with 1,277 involving adulteration.

Human Toll
Victims’ families described sudden symptoms and financial strain. One survivor’s wife noted kidney failure after toddy consumption, highlighting the devastating impact on low-income communities.

Path Forward
The Telangana Human Rights Commission has ordered a report by August 20, 2025, to address regulatory lapses. Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has directed officials to prioritize victim care and enforcement.
