NATIONAL: Justice Surya Kant appointed new CJI

President Droupadi Murmu has formally appointed Justice Surya Kant as the 53rd Chief Justice of India, marking a pivotal moment for the nation’s judiciary.

The announcement, shared by Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal on X, confirms Justice Kant will take the oath on November 24, 2025, succeeding the retiring Justice B.R. Gavai.

A Tenure That Stands Out
Justice Kant’s term, lasting until February 9, 2027, spans over 14 months, the longest since Justice D.Y. Chandrachud’s two-year stint as the 50th CJI.

In contrast, Justice Sanjiv Khanna (51st) served 183 days, while current CJI B.R. Gavai (52nd) wraps up after 194 days on November 23.

This extended leadership offers stability, allowing focus on pressing issues like case backlogs and judicial reforms.

From Humble Roots to Supreme Court
Born on February 10, 1962, in Hisar, Haryana, to a middle-class family, Justice Kant embodies the merit-driven ascent of India’s judiciary.

He joined the Supreme Court on May 24, 2019, after serving as Chief Justice of the Punjab & Haryana and Himachal Pradesh High Courts.

His journey highlights resilience, topping his LL.M. from Kurukshetra University while building a robust career in constitutional law.
