NATIONAL: Inquiry Urges Removal of Justice Verma Over Burnt Cash Scandal
Supreme Court Committee Findings
A Supreme Court-appointed inquiry panel has recommended the removal of Allahabad High Court Judge Justice Yashwant Verma following the discovery of burnt currency notes at his residence. The committee, comprising three judges, conducted a 10-day probe, interviewing 55 witnesses to investigate the incident.
Incident at Official Residence
The controversy stems from a fire at Justice Verma’s official residence during his tenure at the Delhi High Court, where a substantial amount of cash was destroyed. The storeroom, allegedly under the control of Justice Verma or his family, became the focal point of the investigation.
Rejection of Defense Claims
Justice Verma denied any connection to the storeroom, alleging a conspiracy against him. The committee dismissed these claims, noting his failure to report the incident to the police and questioning the presence of large cash reserves.
Evidence of Tampering
The panel found evidence that half of the burnt currency was removed by Justice Verma’s family members in the early hours of March 15. This action raised further concerns about accountability and transparency surrounding the incident.
Public Trust at Stake
The committee emphasized that public confidence in the judiciary hinges on the integrity of its judges, both in and out of court. Any lapses in conduct, such as those alleged in this case, undermine the judiciary’s credibility.
CCTV and Security Oversight
Justice Verma’s argument that the storeroom was under constant CCTV surveillance and controlled by security personnel was rejected. The panel questioned the veracity of these claims, highlighting inconsistencies in his account.
Recommendation to Authorities
Based on the inquiry’s findings, then-Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna recommended Justice Verma’s removal to the President and Prime Minister. The report underscores the need for judicial accountability to maintain public trust.
