NATIONAL: India’s Longest Cable-Stayed Railway Flyover Opens in Ranchi
Historic Inauguration
On June 5, 2025, Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren inaugurated the Siramtoli-Mecon Flyover, India’s longest cable-stayed railway flyover, in Ranchi. Named after tribal leader Kartik Oraon, the 2.34 km infrastructure marvel connects Siramtoli Chowk to Mecon Roundabout via Rajendra Chowk.
Engineering Excellence
Spanning 132 metres over a railway line and 94 metres across the Harmu River, the flyover features Jharkhand’s first extra-dosed cable-stayed design. Its innovative monolithic mono-pile foundation and 72 high-strength cables, sourced from Malaysia, ensure structural resilience.
Unique Design Features
The flyover offers a double-decker-like experience, providing panoramic views of Ranchi’s surroundings. Post-Rajendra Chowk, it bifurcates into two lanes, linking Nepal House and Doranda Post Office, enhancing urban connectivity.
Construction Timeline and Cost
Initiated on August 19, 2022, the Rs 372 crore project was completed in under three years by L&T, despite pandemic-related challenges. Expert consultations from IIT Mumbai and Jharkhand’s Road Construction Department refined its design.
Advanced Infrastructure
The flyover incorporates 42 monopiles and a 1.6-metre-high soundproof crash barrier to minimize noise pollution. Aesthetic lighting, flashing national flag colors every three minutes, and double-arm lights every 30 metres enhance its visual appeal.
Traffic Decongestion Impact
Designed to reduce traffic by up to 40% in key Ranchi areas like Main Road and Kadru, the flyover improves access to the railway station and airport. Six high-mast lights at major junctions ensure safety and visibility.
Community and Controversy
The project faced protests from tribal groups over a ramp near Sarna Sthal, a sacred site, leading to a Jharkhand bandh on June 4, 2025. Despite this, the inauguration proceeded, reflecting the government’s commitment to infrastructure development.
