National: Himachal Faces Extinction Risk: SC Sounds Alarm
Supreme Court’s Dire Warning
The Supreme Court of India has issued a stark warning, cautioning that Himachal Pradesh risks vanishing from the map due to unchecked ecological degradation. The court urged immediate action to address the state’s worsening environmental crisis.
Devastation from Natural Calamities
Monsoon-related disasters, including flash floods and landslides, have claimed 88 lives and left 35 missing in Himachal Pradesh this season. The state has incurred losses of approximately ₹1,500 crore, with critical infrastructure severely damaged.
Human-Induced Ecological Imbalance
Experts attribute the escalating disasters to rampant urbanization, deforestation, and poorly planned construction activities. These human-driven factors have disrupted ecological balance, amplifying the impact of natural calamities.
Court’s Call for Sustainable Action
The Supreme Court directed the central and state governments to prioritize sustainable development over short-term revenue gains. It emphasized the need for robust plans to mitigate climate change impacts and preserve the Himalayan ecosystem.
Urgent Need for Remedial Measures
The court warned that failure to act promptly could jeopardize the state’s environmental stability and the safety and livelihoods of its residents. A comprehensive action plan is expected within four weeks to address these pressing concerns.
