NATIONAL: GST Bonanza: Modi’s Call to Save and Shop Swadeshi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached out to citizens with a heartfelt letter as new GST reforms kicked off on September 22, 2025.

Framing the launch as a “GST Bachat Utsav,” or Savings Festival, he highlighted how these changes aim to put more money back into everyday pockets during the festive season.

The timing feels just right, blending economic relief with the spirit of Navratri.

It’s a nudge toward smarter spending and stronger local roots, showing how policy can weave into the rhythm of daily life.

Key Reforms at a Glance
These next-generation updates streamline the tax system, slashing slabs to mainly 5% and 18%, with many essentials going tax-free or into the lower bracket.

Items like food, medicines, soap, toothpaste, and insurance premiums now cost less, easing the load on households.

Combined with income tax exemptions up to Rs.12 lakh, the moves are set to deliver Rs.2.5 lakh crore in savings this year alone.

Modi pointed to the past decade’s progress, where 25 crore people escaped poverty, as proof of steady gains.

Push for Self-Reliance
Modi urged a shift toward “swadeshi” products, calling on shopkeepers to stock and sell only homegrown goods.

He stressed that true progress lies in building self-sufficiency, especially for a “Viksit Bharat” by 2047.

States got a gentle reminder to foster industry-friendly policies, drawing in more ventures.

This isn’t just about taxes; it’s a vision where local manufacturing thrives, cutting reliance on imports and fueling jobs.

In his words, embracing indigenous items honors the freedom struggle’s ethos while powering modern prosperity.

As shelves fill with affordable options, the real win might be in choices that build a shared future.
